Re: Hey you !
Wed, August 11, 2004 - 12:28 PMhello all! new to the tribe, and I thought I would try to get some discussion going on! I think Martin has a good question.
Being born and raised in the States by Peruvian parents, in a very non-Latin part of town, I think for me, raised some cultural identity issues.
The reason I consider myself Latin is because whenever I would visit my extended family, who for the most part all still live in Peru, I would feel at peace as soon as we left the airport. I would feel like I was finally arriving home after a long journey to a foreign place, and I could finally collect my thoughts. The people, the food, the music, the land, the history, is all a part of me, and when I'm submersed in it, I feel whole.
I felt the same when I was in Guatemala just recently. I've never felt that way in the States. I think in part because most of the States lacks cultural identity. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the States, and I'll be here at least a little while longer, but culturally speaking, there's no sense of belonging, and I don't particularly care for that.
I'm very happy and proud to claim my Latin heritage!!!
